After two months of the school being vacated due to the lockdown, there was plenty that needed to be done to get the school ready to fight the spread of Covid-19.

With minimal resources provided by the DBE, the principal, Mrs Theron, together with a handful of Durban Academy staff members, workers and the SGB chairman, worked tirelessly to get the school sanitised and ready to welcome learners back.

To begin with, the overgrown grass and trees were cut, and broken chairs and tables fixed. Thereafter, the larger classrooms were identified and desks and chairs were sanitised and arranged 1.5m apart. The hall was also prepared with chairs set 1.5m apart and arrows to guide the learners through the daily screening process.

Durban Academy is taking the health and safety of each learner and staff member very seriously and we are ready to embrace the new challenges that the pandemic has brought to our way of teaching.

We are ready and eager for the 2020 academic year to continue.

Durban Academy feels at liberty to address this letter to all our ex-learners, ex-educators and friends of our school, as well as the broader Bluff Community. As you know our grade 12 learners are expected back at school and a survey amongst them shows that they are traumatized by the effect of this pandemic on their lives. They are stressed about their syllabus that needs to be finished and the effect of this unnatural experience on their end of year results. But most of all, our learners have suffered deprivation and hunger over the last two months. We have started a Relief Fund to supply the needs of our learners. The principal and educators want to supply our learners with food on a daily basis, so that they can concentrate on their studies. We therefore plead for assistance. The parents of our school have also been suffering and cannot fulfil their responsibility to the school regarding payment of school fees. It will become impossible to pay the salaries of the educators appointed by the school’s Governing Body. Will you please open your hearts and minds and your purses to assist our school at this difficult time. Any monetary contribution, big or small, will be much appreciated. “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived, it is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead. “(Nelson Mandela) Let all of us strive to make a difference in the life of another human being to overcome the challenges that we are faced with at this difficult time.

Former Acting Principal
